Simon Garfield has put together three books based on the diaries kept by people during the Second World War - Our Hidden Lives, We are at War and Private Battles. Unlike the oral history books, which are more about telling the history of a particular event through short clips from a lot of different people, these three focus in on a small number of people and lets you get to know them on a much more more personal level.
