Roderick,
I am a student, reading History, and am currently writing an essay on resistance and partisan movements in occupied territories during WWII. Clearly, the role and activities of the SOE need to be considered within this rubric and so your book appears to be a rich source for me. However, I am a bit perplexed at the lack of dates within the book. Could you provide answers to the following:
1) On what dates were the interviews recorded? I presume sometime before 2008, however I can't see this is mentioned in the book. I'm sure you are only too aware of the importance of dates to the historian when considering primary sources!
2) I can see that the contributions are arranged in 2 year periods (e.g. 1939 - 41), was this due to the imprecision of memory of the contributors, or was this some requirement from the Official Secrets Act?
I am thoroughly enjoying the book and will no doubt use it in my essay, answers to these questions would help enormously!
Kind regards,
Schmidt-Haus |

Many thanks for your inquiry – and thank you for your kind comments about the book.
I fear this response will arrive too late for your essay, as your query has only now been brought to my attention. But with regard to the dates on which the interviews were conducted, these need to be omitted from the Forgotten Voices series for reasons of space. However, you can find the dates by looking for details of each interview on the IWM catalogue, which you can access here: http://www.iwmcollections.org.uk/qrySound.php
As for the two-year period structure, this was selected as the best method of dealing with the chronological pattern of the operations described in each section: in many cases, operations did not fit neatly into a single year. There was no requirement to conform to the OSA.
With best wishes, and good luck with your research,
Dr Roderick Bailey |
